So, you're going to wear makeup. Where do you really, truly need to begin?
Don't reach for the makeup yet! You need to prep your skin.
Now, I don't mean you need to apply six different products just to get your makeup set. I'm talking about a skin-care routine. Washing, exfoliating, moisturizing. If you have any skin condition, include care for that.
Wash your face. Sounds really simple, right? It can be! You may need to experiment with cleansers that leave your skin feeling clean and soft, without making it oily or dry, or exacerbating any skin conditions. Use warm, not hot, water. Washing your face in the shower can lead to break outs and worsen rosacea from the water pressure and hotter water. If you wash your face in the shower, waterfall the water from your hands and turn the temperature down. Wet your face, lather your cleanser in your hands, apply it to your face and neck.
Exfoliate. I like to use a simple washcloth. It's gentle and I can use it every time I wash my face. How much exfoliation is too much? Usually, your skin will tell you by feeling uncomfortable. It may sting or feel raw. I can also use the washcloth to wipe some of the cleanser off my face, making it easier to rinse with the same warm water. I use a clean, dry washcloth to pat my face dry. (If you use anything coarser than a washcloth to exfoliate, don't exfoliate every time you wash.)
Moisturize. Once you've found a nice moisturizer that suits your skin, apply a thin layer of it over your face and neck. This is a super important step if you have dry skin or and skin condition. If you have a dermatologist, you may be able to discuss options that won't make you skin freak out. You should moisturize every time you wash your face.
It's good to do this ideally twice a day, but at least once a day. If you're planning to apply makeup, you should wash your face before applying makeup for a clean canvas, and at the end of the day to remove it.
Anything additional, such a peels, masks, and strips should be used sparingly. They're not meant for every day use and can cause skin issues if used too frequently.
And there you have it! It may seem like a lot when typed out, but once you get the hang of it, it's really simple.
Disclaimer: This will not cure acne. Acne is a chronic condition that flares with changes like hormonal shifts and exposure to dust, pollen, perfumes, and even the most ordinary of chemicals.
