Step 2: What Goes Under

(Two types of product applied in this post.)

So now that you have washed and moisturized your face, you need to get it ready as your canvas. If you paint, you know that you should start with a gesso to help the paint go on smoother. Similarly, a primer helps base products like foundation and concealer go on smoother and blend better.

However! Before you apply primer, you should always apply sunscreen! This is a tip for every complexion out there. If you have an allergy to the ingredients to most sunscreens and haven't been able to talk to a doctor about alternatives, that's entirely understandable and absolutely an exception to the sunscreen suggestion. If you are not, I strongly encourage you to find a lightweight sunscreen specifically for faces. The formulas are usually more gentle and less oily. It shouldn't feel heavy, either.

Once you've got a nice layer of sun protection, apply a sheer primer all over your face in a thin layer. You can also apply it to your eyelids if you don't have an eye primer. A little goes a very long way, so a bottle of primer should last a long time. You'll need to let that set for about 5 minutes. After those five minutes are up, it's time to apply foundation and concealer.

Given the ongoing "which goes first?" around foundation and concealer, that will be a separate, likely longer post.
